NAPPILYNIGERIANGIRL : MEET CHIBUGO on HEALTHY HAIR JOURNEY
By Hadassah Agbaps - August 05, 2012
When taking "good" care of any hair type be it natural or relaxed, you cannot escape the "investment of quality time" if you want to have healthy strong hair...
Some women who consider going natural are reluctant because they wrongly assume that natural hair care takes time and relaxed hair needs minimal care.
I'd love to argue to the contrary but I decided to channel such time into interviewing a fabulous relaxed (for now..he he...) girlfriend who is known for her frankness.
Enter Gogo, a newly registered medical doctor based in Ghana. As a new doctor, she has next to no time to herself, juggling morning and night shifts at the hospital where she works. It's not been easy pinning her down for this interview due to time constraints ...but here she is!!!
INTRODUCE YOURSELF
My name is Chibugo..I'm 24 yrs old..newly qualified doctor..and a Jesus freak! (*¯︶¯*) .
I'm out going, talk a lot and like making people smile...
LET'S TALK HAIR
My hair is type 4b...relaxed bone straight..very finely textured and low density..currently just went past neck length.
I started my 'healthy' hair journey about 2yrs ago accidentally when I was in the States for the summer and needed a relaxer real bad. So, I read about proper hair care and decided to take a more hands on approach to caring for my hair and I haven't looked back!
WHAT ARE YOUR HAIR CHALLENGES?
My main challenge is getting a hair stylist that can take care of all my hair needs. I'm still looking for someone who can install weaves without too much tension on my fragile hair!
(NNG: Me too!)
HAIRCARE REGIMEN...
I recently started using the LOC EASE method from curlynikki.com (a natural hair blog) which stands for Liquid Oil and Cream.*
I use the products in that order on my edges, all over, sections & ends ...(check details out on blog).
With this method, I don't have to moisturise daily (time constraints) and my hair stays moisturised for 2-3 days.
I usually do it before bed time and wrap my hair.
In the morning I put my hair in a bun (my fave protective style) and I'm good to go...ready to save d world..lols
* this method is great for most types of natural hair.
FAVORITE PRODUCTS...
I have so many fave products but I swear by Organic Root Stimulator replenishing conditioner..can't live without it! I also love coconut oil!
(NNG: I love these products too. Check out my product review in previous post!)
WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON NATURAL HAIR?
My take on natural hair is respect for the chics proudly rocking it!
I don't think I can go natural (due to the traumatising experiences I had as a kid) but I promise to help my daughter have healthy natural hair that she can love...
PERFECT UPDO AND HOW TO ACHIEVE IT?
I'm not a pro or anything but I love messy looking updos.
I don't use heat (except for length checks after a relaxer)..so the night before I either wrap my hair or use bendy rollers if I want curls..and the next morning I let my hair fall around my face and pile different sections up till I find the look that works for the day!!
I usually leave the edges out for a soft look..and I don't pin it up too tightly!
I don't use a hold spray cos my hair is too fine.
(NNG: Most sprays contain drying alcohol anyway so it's best to limit usage).
CURL GIRL?
I love bendy rollers because I love curls and I avoid the use of heat.
I usually divide my damp hair into 3 parts and use one roller for each part..I leave them in overnight and style the next day!
(NNG: Believe it or not, bendy rollers can also be used on natural hair!)
LAST WORDS ?
Hair care is a very rewarding experience..it's fun and exciting but it takes time and effort to see results...plus you have to be willing to try out new stuff till you find what works for you..cos what works for me might not necessarily work for you..a woman's hair is her God given glory!
There you have it from a Nat....oops... relaxed sister. You can follow her on twitter @uberfabgogo.
See??? Good hair care is the same whether natural or relaxed. They both require an time investment! #nuffsaid *whips hair Willow style*
*now crosses time constraints as excuse for not going natural when it's best for you!*
