PROTECTIVE STYLING: SENEGALESE TWISTS WITH CURLS
By Hadassah Agbaps - December 23, 2014
Hi people, what's been on? If you're wondering what style to do, Lissa over at www.thenappydiaries.wordpress.com kindly allowed me to share her protective style.
SENEGALESE TWISTS WITH CURLS
What I used?
Two packs of SuperStar Kanekelon hair extensions; one in black and the other purple. They go for about 450-500 naira in salons and stores but could be cheaper in the market. Shea butter to seal my hair in place of the “oil” most stylists prefer. Extra yarn, extensions or any suitable thread for the curl bunching.
The stylist came over to the house quite early by 8am so while she prepped the extensions I washed my mouth and hurriedly had breakfast.
*talking with a stuffed mouth* I’m having Senegalese twists done and intend to keep it for four weeks.

Hi people, what's been on?
I've been sick and had a major reaction to the drugs I was given but I'm stronger now....drugs and I just don't mix.
My appreciation goes to those of you that inquired and sent thoughtful messages. *hugs*
I haven't forgotten the giveaway so here's the list of people that indicated interest in trying out the Aphogee Curlific Curl Definer.
I numbered all entries in the order they appeared in my comments box and then used a random application to find the winner.
1. Nike
2. Olufolade
3. AB
4. Osayi
5. Glowreeya
6. Iamsamsie
7. Oluwabusola
8. Kells
9. Fadekemi
Result
CONGRATULATIONS OLUWABUSOLA!!!!
I'll be sending you an email via the email given....PS. Don't forget to send in your own review so I can put it up with mine!
Thank you all for participating and don't worry if you didn't win. As a New Years gift to you, I'll do another giveaway and automatically qualify the remaining 8 participants to give one of you an opportunity to join me in my next review, okay?!
Don't worry guys, I think I enjoy the concept of reviewing a product with a reader and I get to try out a lot of products so watch out for the next opportunity!
Oh....before I forget, remember my review of Miss Jessie's Jelly Soft Curls and Cantu Shea Define and Shine Custard and how I said I loved the slip (and lower price) of the Cantu but the flaking was going to be a problem?
Well I liked it so much that I had to find a solution.....just like I did for Cantu Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream
To reduce the risk of flaking after this product has given you the definition you want, simply layer on a small amount of Jack5curl activator gel!
I think it helps provide enough moisture so the curls don't dry too soon and flake.
Hope this helped someone......
Till I spill again,
xoxo

Hi people, what's been on?
Today I'd like to share my thoughts regarding child haircare and fashion especially for a child with kinky curly hair.
I've been observing from afar the debates surrounding Blue Ivy's hair and how people felt it was unkempt and how some parties felt that Beyonce should do more to make her baby girl's hair sleek and neat.............and I disagree.

Happy new month people! What's been on???
Speaking of something new, I'd like to share with you guys my new routine. It's not a totally new routine per se, just a time saving addition.
These days, I'm having less time what with my dissertations coming up and with work and everything in between.
To make matters worse, I just learnt that the road construction going on near my house (which I thought was simply for maintenance) was to actually build a new flyover.....and Lord knows how many years that's going to take!
There's red dust everywhere! The rains help the dust settle faster but in a typical Nigerian fashion, one second it is raining and the next second the scorching sun is blazing and the dust is released to attack my face, my body and my hair!
Initially, I shampoo a very convenient once a month but with this development, I have to shampoo twice and cowash every 3 days. This means that I now shower head to toe! I think I might as well start the Maximum Hydration Method I've been putting off till holidays sef!
Washing my hair every 3 days means that I have to deal with wet hair more often than not and I really dislike dripping dripping hair....I get cold easily.
It also means that I either leave my hair as is in a wash and go style or I have to stretch it in one way or the other.
Consistent wash and gos make my hair knot up badly. I have accepted that on any given day, I will have at most two knots on a strand of hair. I fought the battle to get zero knots and I lost. If I persist, I'll be left with a twa. So I just let them be. I don't like them...they don't like me either so it's a "live and let live" situation.
With this 3 day cowash regimen and my laziness to properly twist my hair to stretch it, this symbiotic relationship is bordering on a parasitic relationship with some knots having a knot on its back....its baby.....so my knots are breeding!!
When I washed once a month, I only had to twist once and then cowashed the twists maybe once a week. Now I have to cowash the twists twice a week which means at some point, I have to redo my twists due to fuzziness...and I really don't have the strength for that. It's too stressful.
So what's a girl to do when the game changed without her knowledge???
Banding!!!
I have never felt so grateful to the makers of Noble or First Lady Kinky Hair for including colorful bands. Most times I have to throw them away because they are too puny to hold my hair...and now my neighbour has a pretty daughter, her hair never lacks!
I guess her supply may dwindle a bit because I've discovered a use for them.
Banding!!!
So did they help?
My previous routine was shampoo roots in twists, deep condition and use a conditioner to rinse off the deep conditioner. Then I use a T shirt to blot off excess water before retwisting to make my hair stretch neatly. Then on Monday morning ( I shampoo on weekends) I'll untwist for a twistout or if it hasn't dried completely I do my regular bun.
My current routine means that I co wash midweek and on weekends too....sometimes even more.
It means I have to retwist more often which I don't have time for...and remember at midback length, I have a lot of hair to deal with! This is one reason I trim my hair often.
To shorten my time, I cowash my hair in two or four sections , fingerdetangle each section with a slippery conditioner ( Had to restock on Tresemme conditioner....my fave Aussie is MIA), rinse , blot excess water, apply a leave in and oil then gather all the hair in a ponytail and start banding.
The first banding session I use just 4-5 bands and increase as I have time for. Then I wrap my hair in a T shirt to trap all the water. Before bedtime which is usually 12pm-1 am these days, I'll put on my bonnet and make like a log....
In the morning, three things may happen...
- I might wake up late and ready to rush out the door so my hair will stay banded. For this reason, I try not to use childish colors and favor red bands (wish they included black). I might even pin up the ends of the bands to make a chic low bun.
- I might wake up early but not interested in touching my hair (probably because it is still damp) and I still leave the house like the former.
- I might wake up early, my hair all dried and stretched and I will cut away all bands except the root band and sport a ponytail.
I cut off the bands instead of pulling them out to minimise tangles and breakage.
So you see, the bands really do make my hair life much easier and faster. It's a win-win situation for me and my hair.
Have you tried banding?
Do you have any time saving tips you'd like to share?

This post has been a long time coming but I wanted to make sure it's something that can be sustained before I share. If you've been following me on Instagram @nappilynigeriangirl, you'd already be in the know. With a lot of projects on my plate it's easier to update on instagram.
A lot of people have been complaining (myself included) about how difficult it was to find a salon that caters to natural hair in Nigeria. This has been taken care of in Lagos with about three natural hair salons (I know).
- KLS Natural Salon
- Tunmise Natural Hair Salon
- O' Naturals Natural Hair Salon.
There's a natural hair salon in Abuja too
- Lumo Naturals Natural Hair Salon and Spa.
For more deets see here
To my knowledge, there's no salon for naturalistas based in Eastern Nigeria, so when a friend of mine decided to set up a hair and nail studio, she suggested I help her put together a natural hair section in the studio and I agrred!

CURL DEFINITION: DO THE CURLY GIRL, TIGHTLY CURLY OR MAXIMUM HYDRATION METHOD WORK?
By Hadassah Agbaps - August 09, 2014
Hi people, what's been on? I hope everyone is healthy and free from Ebola. Y'all know the drill, stay safe!
Today, I'm going to review yet another leave in conditioner, Kinky Curly Knot Today. This leave in has been the holy grail of a lot of 'obodo oyibo' naturalistas and because there was enough reviews about it to help out any naturalista looking for products, I didn't see any need to add mine to the bunch.
That is until someone asked me how good it really was.
I told her it should be good since it has won many awards with regards to natural hair care. She was like yes she had read the reviews of naturals in America, Europe, Australia etc but how well did it work for Nigerian hair in Nigeria.
Together we decided to look for reviews by Nigerian naturals and despite the popularity of the product and how it was readily available in Cadabella Stores nationwide, we were only able to come up with one review by LoveIfeyinwa.
So relunctantly on my next shopping, I decided to grab this and a bottle of the Kinky Curly Come Clean Shampoo to try out. Did it live up to the hype???

Hi people, what's been on? Happy New month guys!
It's getting busier and busier so I may not post as often as I'd like this month. Before I disappear, I'd like to share my little wash routine that gets my hands out of my hair in less than an hour.
Yep...I said it....less than an hour.
I really don't get it when people complain about the long hours it takes to wash natural hair. When I say it isn't supposed to be so complicated it's like I'm 'forming natural hair veteran/guru'.....but that's not it.
I'm a lazy impatient natural that really don't want to spend more than 30 mins wet. Not only that, I get cold very easily and the sooner I'm warm and dry the better.
The popular reasons for a long wash day are very thick hair, very kinky hair and very long hair.
Well, my hair is full, long, kinky and prone to tangling and yet my wash day doesn't take a day and a half. If it does, it's probably because I'm doing too much.
Before I start, here are 'pre wash day' tips to help you save time.
- Purchase a shampoo and conditioner with slip (feels slippery). It makes combing your hair easier and faster.
- Reduce the amount of DIY products you use. They can be quite messy and hard to rinse off. Save them for when you have time. As much as I love my DIY mixes, I have store bought products that offer similar benefits.
- Always braid or twist hair before bed. Even if it's in a protective style like kinky braids or twists. This helps prevent bedtime tangling. Extra points it you sleep with your satin scarf, bonnet or pillow.
- Prior to wash day, increase your moisturising game. Make your daily leave in conditioner your friend. This not only reduces dryness and unnecessary breakage on wash day, it also makes it easier to detangle.
- Gradually stretch and detangle your hair. My hair is in a bun most of the time and the middle of the bun can mesh and get tangled. So before wash day, I up my moisturising game using my LOC mix and then gradually detangle and put my hair in loose twists and pack up in a ponytail. This helps keep my hair stretched. If you aren't so neat with twists or braids, you can do them and hide them under a wig or scarf.
- The night before wash day, I'll either apply manshanu (adds an extra 10mins to my wash day) or a slippery conditioner mixed with coconut oil to my hair. Then fingerdetangle, put my hair in 'washing' twists and cover overnight.
WASH DAY PROPER..
- I apply shampoo to my scalp alone. Then work into a lather (or something like it when I'm using a cleansing pudding). I smooth in the direction of hair growth to reduce tangles especially now I have more hair to deal with. Then I rinse allowing the run off to wash my ends. All this while my hair is in four or six twists.
- Then I apply a deep conditioner to each twist.
I'll untwist, apply a glob of deep conditioner, smooth through hair and loosely twist away. I'm currently loving SheaMoisture African Black Soap Purification Masque. I increase the slip by mixing with a conditioner like VO5 Conditioner, Trader Joe's Nourish Spa, Tresemme or Kinky Curly. I'll cover with a shower cap while I shower. The heat of the shower (verry hot) is enough to get the D.C. flowing.
- When I'm done showering, I rinse off the D.C. with very cold water.....my head only. My body safely out of reach.
- I use VO5 conditioner to cowash the D.C. away if it's oily.
- Then I blot my hair dry. Since it's still in twists, rinsing doesn't completely remove the conditioner which suits my highly porous hair just fine and the reason I buy natural/light conditioners.
This takes me less than 45mins because I don't like being wet and cold.
STYLING
I don't like styling my hair on wash day because my hair is very very fragile when it's wet so the less I do to it the better.
If I wash early in the morning, I make loose twists and style my hair like this:
If I wash at night, I make loose twists and style my hair like this:
If I have an outing that day, my hair is most likely going to be styled like this:
I get creative about two days after wash day. My hair is much stronger then.
Before styling, I apply castor/palmkernel oil mix to my scalp and coconut oil to my hair. I currently add Kinky Curly Knot Today on top to give me some slip during styling.
So that's it for wash day....about an hour from start to finish.
Hope this helps someone.
Till I spill again,
Live Beautifully. Naturally.
Hadassah.
What's your wash day like and how do you keep it short?

What's your wash day like and how do you keep it short?

Hi people, what's been on?
Today I'll like to share how I define my coils for very special events. I have written an earlier post about this but here's an update.
Before I begin, I have to point out that curl definition for me isn't about trying to make my hair look less kinky because I love the randomness of undefined hair.
Just as it takes work and products to put every silky strand of straight hair in place, it takes the same to put every strand of coil in place.
I'm saying this because when I share a picture of my defined hair, I'm always asked why I don't style my hair like that on a daily basis when they see my cloud type hair.
I'm happy with both the cloud (when my hair does what it does) and the rain (when I force every coil in place)....and please not to be conceited or anything...if you see any natural with rain type defined hair please do not touch it! It takes hours to do!
It's just like when you take the time to curl your weave in bendy rollers to achieve perfect curls and people keep touching it causing your perfect curls to frizz up and fall...#enufsaid.
Most times we see natural hair adverts displaying kinks and coils with nary a strand out of place, each coil perfectly round and springy and we think that is the default look of natural hair. It isn't!
Frizzes are normal. Shrinkage is normal and the random hair that refuses to play with its brothers is soo normal.
It is normal to have a cloud on your head instead of a cascade of coils.
I can bet you that the best selling natural hair products are 'curl definers' and their hidden message is 'we can convert kinks to coils, coils to curls and curls to waves in one easy step'.
Seriously though, the best they can do is weigh down the hair to enlongate coils and be sticky enough to make your hair clump....which is good for a style change but not good for everyday styling.
If your hair isn't fine enough to be weighed down or held together in clumps, the most these curl definers can do is be good moisturisers and provide hold for your twistouts, bantu knot outs or braid outs.
That being said, sometimes you want your hair to coil perfectly for a special event or a photoshoot.
Here's my tried and true method for doing so.
What you'll need.
- clean deep conditioned hair. An ACV rinse at the end is an added advantage because it helps your cuticle lie smoother and reduces tangles.
- A curl definer. If you have fine hair, a slippery conditioner will work. If you have medium hair a strong hold alcohol free gel will work.
See suggestions here
- A detangling tool...you can use your fingers, a wide tooth comb, a Denman D3 brush or a tangle teezer brush. (If you've mastered detangling with brushes).
- Loads of patience! This should be done when you are comfortable, free with nothing to do but watch seasonals.
HOW TO.
- Shampoo and condition your hair.
- Deep condition hair with your favorite moisture infusing deep conditioner. It saves time in my opinion. I use Aussie Moist 3 Mins Reconstructor mixed with manshanu. The point of a D.C. is to infuse the hair with moisture so it is coily and springy.
- Rinse out with cold water and cowash if your D.C. contains a lot of oils.
- Blot off excess water gently. Hair should be damp.
- Spray hair with dilute ACV or aloe vera juice and work in. This helps smoothen your strands to reduce tangles.
- Divide hair into small sections like you want to roll it.
- To each section apply depending on your hair texture a slippery conditioner, a curl definer or gel. I used FOTE Aloe Vera gel. It's affordable and readily available in Nigeria. I also like Ecostyler Olive Oil gel (also affordable), Kinky Curly Curling Custard, As I Am Smoothing Gel, Shea Moisture Curling Souffle (these are a bit pricey but if you are into all natural ingredients they are worth a shot). Cantu Coconut curling cream works well on fine and medium thickness hair but is reduced to a moisturiser on people with thick hair. Aphogee Curlific Curl Definer has enough slip and hold and work well with most hair textures.
.....wait....I'm digressing with reviews....sorry...okay back to directions....
- Finger comb, use "praying hands method" or brush with a Denman brush (if you know how to use it properly) through the section from ends to roots until your curls begin to clump.
Tip: If you have hair with very tiny coils, you'll have to give that clumped section a blast with a blowdryer using cool setting or you can make loose twists so it sets a little bit longer and looser.
To get the ends to curl evenly, wrap around your finger and release carefully....like fingercoiling.
- Continue until you are done.
Time: Depending on your hair texture , density and how perfect you want your coils to be this will take between 2-5 hours from beginning to end.
P.s. You see why I dodge when someone wants to touch my hair....it's work.
Here's the final look.
Night time routine: Satin bonnet or scarf. In the morning spray with small water and go.
How long did it last? 3 weeks. I should have gone longer but I really needed to wash off the products! I'm a fan of light product free hair.
So there you have it!
Any tips or questions, let me know.
Oh....and someone suggested a method called doodling. I would just be using a conditioner for that and then wrap coils around my fingers to define them. I tried it, didn't really get it right and was left feeling cold because I didnt want to leave the bathroom with so much conditioner. I'll try again though!
I also learnt about using coke to define curls...hmm....
If you've tried out any of these methods please share in the comments section or link back.

STYLE OF THE WEEK: OMBRE KINKY TWISTS ON NATURAL HAIR
By Hadassah Agbaps - July 01, 2014
Happy new month people!!!!
What's been on?
I got my hair done after..... I can't remember how many months.
That's the best part of being natural for me. I do not have to depend on extensions or weaves or wigs to look presentable.
I had to protect my hair and my pocket though because lately I've been splurging on new hair products thanks to my sister who just did the big chop. I had to assist her in putting together products for her hair type and being the shopaholic that she is and the junkie that I am, let's just say the product review posts are piling up.
My hair was beginning to complain so to let it rest, I decided to try out a hairstyle I've always been meaning to do.
Y'all know I recently dyed my hair ombre and for some reason, I want to ombre everything. It's a phase I'm sure.
I liked the ombre braids/twists done with Xpression braiding hair. I wondered what it would look like if done with kinky hair. At least there won't be blending issues and I can moisturie my hair without 'aging' my braids.
So I purchased two packs of two different coloured kinky hair ; Black (First Lady Kinky Extensions) and Color 30 ( Noble Kinky Braid).
Oh...I learnt that there's Kinky braiding hair with the ombre effect by ombretwist.com but since I don't have it, a gal's got to improvise....yeah?
So to get the look, the hair is twisted normally and the colored hair is added to the end. The ends are curled using bantu knots method and dipped in hot water.
Allow to dry. #shikena
Tip: If your hair is fine like mine, try square parts instead of circular parts to help out with volume instead of adding more kinky hair because this can weigh down and break your strands.

NAPPY Q & A: SHOULD I GO NATURAL OR SHOULD I TEXTURISE MY NATURAL HAIR ?
By Hadassah Agbaps - June 26, 2014
A: Please could you advise me?
I have been transitioning for 10 months now and a friend advised me on using texturizer on my hair. What is texturizer all about and is it advisable to use it?
Q: Hi dear,
A texturiser is similar to a relaxer. It has the same ingredients but with lower strength and processing time. The difference on your hair is that a relaxer will completely make your hair straight while a texturiser will make your hair wavy.
Typical results look like this:
....but it can be looser or tighter depending on how long the texturiser is left in and your original hair texture.
Like natural hair you
- have volume
- have curls...just looser.
- have hair more resistant to damage...unlike fully relaxed hair.
- need to moisturise often...in fact more as texturised hair gets very dry.
- have shrinkage....though less than natural hair.
Like relaxed hair you
- have hair that is looser and easier to comb (if natural hair was difficult to comb)...so less time spent detangling.
- have less shrinkage and more visible length due to stretching.
- need to retouch ...but every six months instead of three/four.
- need to do protein treatments often.
- may run the risk of chemical burns.
- have hair that tangles when wet. It shouldn't be detangled dry either to avoid breakage. So you'll need a detangler.
So in essence , texturised hair is a cross between natural hair and relaxed hair. You'll still need to care for it the way you would your natural hair and even more because it's still a chemical treatment.
To get the best out of it, take what you know about natural hair care especially concerning sulfate free shampoos, silicone free conditioners and the daily moisturising and incorporate it into your regimen.
Before you go that route, seek professional help and someone with experience in texturising hair in other to get uniform wavy results or else you may get multiple textures with straightened bits.

HOW I USE REETHA (SOAPNUT) AND GRAPESEED OIL TO CALM ACNE PRONE SKIN
By Hadassah Agbaps - June 19, 2014
Hi people, what's been on?
I've been so busy of late that the only thing I do with my nights is SLEEP. That doesn't stop me from sharing what's been on hairwise on Instagram.
I was tagged by Freda to confess all the sins I've committed with my natural hair! Here's the good, bad and ugly things I've done!
1. I've relaxed my hair. Back in secondary school, my edges refused to behave so I had the brilliant idea to relax them with a relaxer....*face palm*
NATURAL HAIR UPDATE AND PROTECTIVE STYLING CHALLENGE
By Hadassah Agbaps - May 08, 2014
Hi people, what's been on?
I've been in a bun for a while due to exams and an increasingly busy life but seriously though...that's no excuse not to get more creative with my hair.
Most times the only extra thing I do is put my hair in twists and style from there.
So I decided to take part in the #31daysofkinkz Instagram May challenge hosted by Nigerian naturalistas @kinkyapothecary , @ibbz_ter and @berrydakara. If you are on Instagram, check us out there! For those not on Instagram, I'll share some pics of the hairstyles we've done so far!
My Instagram profile is @nappilynigeriangirl.
I'm still trying to grow my fine porous hair down my waist (when stretched) and shoulder length (in a shrunken fro). So far, I'm succeeding!
My regimen is still the Indian Oiling Method with some Ayurvedic elements. I still shampoo once a month, cowash once a week or every now and then (there's a road construction going on near my street and my hair is always dusty), henna treatment once a month and deep conditioning, tea rinse and Apple Cider rinse when I need it.
