MY REVIEW.
I ordered off Amazon and had to wait a month before it got to me in Nigeria. I was really curious to know if this product will withstand the Nigerian humidity and last for the 4-6 weeks promised. If it did, it meant that I could not only rock straight hair for longer without my hair reverting almost immediately but I could also rock straight weaves with leave outs without having to straighten my hair every day for it to blend. This will complete the full cycle of natural hair freedom I crave.
I can actually go from kinky to curly to wavy to straight anytime I felt like.....what more does a girl want hair wise?
Funny enough as soon as my product arrived, my hair behaved itself so well that I didn't feel the push to rock a straight style. So my kit gathered dust....lol!
That is until my younger sis came home from school and said she wanted a change from her curls. She was even considering colour and I was reminded of the kit and we decided to use it on her hair.
It won't be my first time of using the product though. One of my natural haired friends wanted to fix a wavy weave and needed her hair to blend in. She was willing to have a complete closure but when I showed her the kit, she said she wouldn't mind trying it out on her leave out.
Long story short, it was an EPIC FAIL. Yes her hair was silky straight and smooth but as soon as she headed out into the eastern Nigerian rain and pour, she had mixed race hair.....afro in front, brazilian wavy behind...lol!
I was disappointed and wondered what went wrong.....I later found out but let's continue.....
Back to my sis.
Shampoo
After reading the colorful style guide, I shampooed my sister's hair three times as directed until her hair was squeaky clean.
Gosh it's been a long time I heard that "squeak squeak" sound...like way back in the days when I shampooed my hair with HairFruits.
A little of the shampoo went a long way. I didn't even use up to half.
I was surprised because when my kit got to me, it was so light that I had to call my friend back and ask her if she accidentally misplaced some contents of the kit.
Relaxer kits weighed more than this and I felt that since they were dealing with the massive manes we naturalistas have, they can't be serious with the puny bottles!
.....but they were....and it was more than enough...lol!
So after shampooing, I blotted my sister's hair dry and applied two caps full of the InterActive leave in conditioner to her hair.
It smelled a bit like Aphogee protein treatment with some hint of bubble gum scent. The shampoo smelt really bubble gummy too.
The leave in was runny and slippery. It wasn't difficult to detangle my sister's hair at all.
Then we let it to steep for 20mins. This was the part I missed in my friend's try out. I was so eager to see how it worked that I went at her hair with the dryer to speed things up......non...non...non.
So wait 20mins after application of the leave in before blow drying.
Blow drying
I divided my sister's hair into 6 sections and blowdried using the tension method and my fingers only first. Once her hair was stretched, I used the chase method with a wide tooth comb to get her hair even straighter.
Flat ironing
I used an ionic flat iron with a digital screen for temperature setting. In the leaflet provided, there are different temperatures for different hair types and there was a hint of a warning that very high temperatures might make the reversion process more difficult. Between the two temperature ranges provided for my sister's hairtype, I decided to err on the side of caution by using the lower temperature (150-205°C).
In a house full of naturalistas, I couldn't find a rat tail comb to smoothen the path of the flat iron for a sleek finish so I had to make do with a nylon bristle brush. Then in frustration, I flung it away and managed with a Denman brush.
I wanted to use heat protection since I'm not used to dealing with heat straightening without it but then I didn't want to interfere with any of the process to get a good result.
So here's my sister's hair, day 1 and day 2.
Day 1 |
Day 2 : Hair was beaten by the rain |
I'll put up updates of her hair here and on Instagram so you can see exactly how it goes, if her hair did revert and in what condition post treatment.
My verdict so far?
Well, I do like the fact that compared to the other times I straightened my sister's hair, my results with this product was smoother and sleeker and I didn't have to make the parts very thin or make more than three passes with the flat iron.
Her day 2 hair impressed me because just as we were stepping out for church, down came the rain and enough had touched her hair before we could get to the car. I was expecting her hair to magically transform as it usually does but her hair stayed straight! Her edges though started becoming wavy by evening so I want to see how it fares by day 3.
Update: Day 3 hair
Update: Day 4
It's looking like blown out hair but it's still straight. Her roots has reverted about an inch or less.
If not, then it is not worth buying IMO.
It's really humid and wet here so I don't even expect straight styles to last up to 3 days before shrinkage sets. I usually rock curly styles in rainy season and straight styles in harmattan. Infact I'm currently rocking mini twists.
UPDATE: Her hair lasted two weeks and because I felt it was about time her hair got a dose of real moisture (water), I shampooed it using the Step A shampoo provided. I was expecting her hair to stay straight but it curled right up. I noticed her curls were less frizzy and shiny which meant the product was still in her hair. She also didn't have breakage which I expected from going straight and water free for two weeks.
FINAL VERDICT
I see how this is some sort of keratin protein treatment in the way it leaves the hair feeling stronger. Heat bonds the protein to your hair and the protein helps hold the straightness in... to put it simply.
About worries using a heat protectant prior to blowdrying, I noticed the leave in conditioner had a small amount of cyclopentasiloxane and dimethicone which is usually the main ingredient in heat protectants. I feel that using more can interfer with the heat bonding process of the keratin to your hair.
Would I use this treatment again? Yes I will since it gives me humidity resistant straightening in addition to protein strengthening.
I don't care much about the manageability aspect since I have never ever had the belief that natural hair is unmanageable.
Hope this review was informative.
If you have tried this treatment or any other straightening treatment, do share your experience in the comments section. If you have any questions about this product, ask away! Lol!

Interestingly, all the reviews I've seen... all the ladies chose to revert after 7 days. So now I'm not sure it can actually last longer than that.
ReplyDeleteLet us see...let us see...I'm hoping it lasts longer than that though for those that prefer styles to last two weeks or more. Personally, one week is enough to miss my curls already...lol!
DeleteI'll be watching out for the update. Still scared sha ( ._.)
ReplyDeleteDon't be scared o. The hair will definitely revert. My fear is that the straightening won't last a week sef....not with this Nigerian humidity! Let be seeing sha...lol!
ReplyDeleteThis is really informative tho. It worth giving a huge try o. I hope to try it pretty soon. Tho.
ReplyDeleteAnd it seems quite affordable for a product this good. Thanks for the well detailed review.
