I'M DETERMINED TO GROW MY HAIR EVEN LONGER FOR CHRISTMAS
By Hadassah Agbaps - November 15, 2016
Hi people, what's been on?
Just in case you missed it, "The Kitchen, The Living Room and the Other Room" is the unpublished sequel to the "Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" which was actually supposed to be titled "The Lion, The Witch and The Workplace".
The Lion being men, the Witch being women and the Workplace being .....wait for it....itself!
When a certain prominent man who happens to be the president of one African country passed a joke about "not knowing what party his wife belonged to but all he knew was his wife belonged to his kitchen, living room and bedroom" a lot of people worldwide were aghast!
They judged his statement to be "chauvinistic, misogynistic and insensitive" especially considering that the female leader of a certain country was present.
Did he mean she was in the wrong place?
Here's the thing....people can P.R.E.T.E.N.D. !!!!
Why are we surprised???!!!
Anyone shocked at this mentality worldwide (not just the African mentality in particular) must be living in a bubble!
Yes I said it!!!
Everyday around the world, women protest about equality in the workplace. They complain they are being paid less than men with same position and responsibility.
Infact I'll go on to say I'm currently loving #Leaderswithoutfilter!!!I'm sick and tired of all the diplomatic BS where people lie not only through their teeth but with every fibre of their being!I applaud this speaker for being honest about the mentality that most people share.....both men and women!!!
(Disclaimer: I'm not a feminist because the definition of "feminist" is not 100% what I stand for as a woman. I'm using the Merriam Webster Dictionary definition).
Let's continue......
With some people's mentality (men and women) concerning women's role in the society, I honestly don't see the point in educating the girl child beyond primary or even secondary school especially if since at the end of the day she's expected to "stay at home". What's the point wasting money on a university education just so she meets the criteria of "being a graduate". That's balderdash!!!!!I think the concept of "Finishing Schools for the Girl Child" should be revisited. After her primary education when she's grasped basic maths (to calculate household expenses), english (to communicate in the lingua franca) and science ( to know the science of stain removal and what to do if her kitchen caught fire), a finishing school will teach her things like :'basic first aid for the family' 'how to sew a button and mend socks''how to cook meals for different occasions' 'how to set the table if the husband invites his boss for dinner' 'how to look good to please your husband''how to school your facial expression so you're always happy even if you're sad inside so you create a happy ambience in the home''how to be the best in the other room' 'money management for the good times and the bad times'etc. It will run for just 2 years (so the girl is young enough and her biological clock won't tick away) and she'll be awarded a diploma (so she has evidence of a post primary education and proof that she's the perfect wife material). There'll be no point wasting her life studying in the university only to drop her degree in the same box she drops her marriage certificate.Leave university education for the male child since he'll be the one making full use of the certificate and will give return on investment.
Hi people, what's been on?
Lately, it's been getting really cold especially early in the morning and at night. Being a warm blooded and tiny creature, the last thing I need in my life is a hairstyle that would cause my teeth to chatter.
I'm always the first person to say things like "turn off the AC", "I'm freezing", "Why isn't the water hot." I like heat. I work better when I'm warm. I love scalding hot water. Maybe because I have little fat on my bones or maybe that's the way I'm wired....I don't know.
I also don't like water drip, dripping on me. It's a pet peeve and turns up my irritation level the same way typing "Am coming" instead of "I'm coming" does.
So I've devised methods to stay dry on wash day and today will be sharing how to stay dry when styling your natural hair in a wash and go.
WHAT YOU NEED
* Clean water in a spray bottle
* Oil (I used NappyGirl Growth Enhancing Oil)
* Gel ( I used Miss Jessies Jelly Soft Curls)
METHOD
Wear your favorite T-shirt, it'll help you practice control over drippies....lol...just kidding.
I started with freshly cowashed hair. Here's a hack for a 30 mins washday.
I braided my hair up and allowed it to air dry overnight.
The following morning, I divided my hair into manageable sections and loosely twisted. You can hold sections with butterfly clips.
To each section I applied NappyGirl Growth Enhancing Oil. I currently prefer adding products to dry hair first before spraying with water a la the Oiling Regimen I'm dedicated to. It helps my high porosity hair retain moisture better.
Then I sprayed each section with clean water in a spray bottle. My spray bottle contains just water to prevent microbes from growing. I change this water as often as every 2-3 days. I don't fancy spraying germs into my hair and skin!
Next, I applied a small amount of gel and worked the gel into the section using praying hands. The smaller the section, the easier it is to work with.
You'll notice your curls clumping together, so separate them carefully and then loosely twist. Loosely twisting helps keep your hair stretched and also enhance clumping.
I did the same for all the other sections.
Later, starting from the first section you worked with, unravel twists.
Shikena.
Wash and go hair, no drippies!
Pretty cool for cold weather conditions, right?!
Here's a link to the video I made of the process
FIVE HAIR IDEAS TO TRY OUT BEFORE THE BIG CHOP
By Hadassah Agbaps - October 15, 2016
Hi people, what's been on?
Recently I was in Lagos. It's not my first time in Lagos actually, but everytime I go there, it takes me a while to get used to the hustle and bustle especially the endless traffic.
I'm used to staying in quiet, laid back cities such as Kaduna, Abuja, Awka, Enugu, Osun etc. I've stayed a while in Lagos but still never can get used to it. For example, whenever you want to plan your day, you always have to factor in traffic jam or plan your movement against traffic. For someone who is visiting the city, it's confusing to know what side of Lagos will experience traffic jams. I think an app for that will be in order...maybe using the heat generated by parked cars to plot the intensity of traffic in a particular area.
Just to be sane, I made my sister (who lives in Lagos and wouldn't live anywhere else) my unofficial personal assistant. I'd tell her what I'd like to do and where I'd like to go for the day and she'd tell me how feasible my plans were for that day.....lol.
It's such a pain because I can't be random with my movement or I'll waste the day in traffic.
Anyway, one thing I love about Lagos is the fact that there's always an event to brighten up a dull weekend! It could be a wine tasting event, a book reading, poetry recital, food festival, fashion week, etc.....there's always something lined up and I think I can tolerate Lagos just because of that....lol.
Two such events I was able to catch up with were the Beauty Africa Exhibition which took place in Landmark Event Centre, V.I. on Saturday and SheLeadsAfrica shopping event held in Heritage Place, Ikoyi on Sunday.
Due to my program for the day, I missed most of the activities of Beauty Africa Exhibition. I was really surprised to hear they'd wrapped up by 5pm! Anyway it wasn't for naught as I was able to meet up with Kemi Lewis (CEO of KLs Naturals Beauty Bar) and Joshua Lomotey (Design Essentials Representative for Africa, Middle East and Europe) and Kemi shared her secret for laid edges when it comes to bridal styling.
I was also able to indulge in a little retail therapy at the Nectar Beauty Hub stand. I got some new products to try.
Quick question....is my favourite Masque, SheaMoisture Purification Masque being discontinued? I saw this other masque and simply thought it was just rebranding since the ingredients are very similar but when I got home and opened it, it was a totally different product. I'm a bit disappointed but I'll give it a try and know how it goes. If it doesn't work that well, thank God I have another favourite conditioning product Brazen Curls Masque to fall back on. It is a Nigerian Product by the way and a review of this product is long overdue. Please don't be discontinued!!!
I also got a SheaMoisture Lotion. I'm usually wary of Shea butter based lotions for my skin due to the fact that it breaks out easily. I'm quite comfortable with my oil mix which has evolved from simple grapeseed oil to include a much wider range of beneficial oils (I'll dedicate a post to that). My sister swears by SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Lotion for her dry skin. It was heavy for my oily skin but after trying out their Lavender and Calendula range which is lighter and less greasy, I've been open to trying out (carefully I must add) other ranges of the product.
I'll give you a feedback soon.
On Sunday, thanks to encouragement from Rachael of BeautifullyNappy ( I was still debating if I wanted to go or not), I attended the shopping event of SheLeadsAfrica female entrepreneurship program. I wasn't able to attend the main conference but since the shopping event was going to expose me to Nigerian content, I was game.
I had the pleasure to finally meet for the first time, Rachael of BeautifullyNappy.com (a natural hair and beauty shopping website), Ekene of TheKinkandI.com (a natural hair blog) , Uzo of DontTouchHair.com (a personal beauty blog and resource site for Nigerian products) and bumped into Bukky, a high school classmate ( I rep Zamani College, 04).
The shopping........
There were a lot of vendors with different Nigerian products but what drew me were the shoes!
I've been looking for a long while for black patent leather flats. I like them because they are comfortable and shiny enough to look dressy enough for not so casual occasions.
These are from Thandos.com.
I really like that they are foldable and can easily be smuggled into my bag for those events were it's compulsory to wear heels. I usually do at the beginning of the event but midway, I take off the heels for comfortable flats or sandals.....don't judge me!
I'll be honest, I'm usually sceptical about the quality of Nigerian made shoes not because I'm a snob but because I've had experiences with the shoes falling apart at the worst moments. I'll give these a try and let you know if it's worth buying.
Later in the evening, I met up with Toyin of TwentySix85.com (an online natural and organic hair and beauty store) at The Ice Cream Factory. It was my last day in Lagos and she treated me to ice cream and red velvet cake.
Yummy!
I enjoyed the ice cream but after eating ChiChi's (creator of ChiChi's cuisine) red velvet cake, Ice Cream Factory's red velvet was just so so in my opinion.
Speaking of Toyin, your hair and my hair is going to love a new project she's come up with!!!! I'm 50 shades of excited!
On a random ununrelated note, have you tried fiofio and ugba???? I love it with the love of "Abacha" aka "African Salad". My friend, Chi made it for me and I threw away all the etiquette of a house guest by eating, eating and asking for more!
Do you live in Lagos? What do you love about the city?
Did you attend any events in Lagos recently? Gist me!!!

NATURAL HAIRSTYLE PICTORIAL: THE HORIZONTAL ROLL AND TUCK
By Hadassah Agbaps - September 14, 2016
Hi people, what's been on?
Today is another pictorial about a simple style you can do on short, medium and long textured natural hair. It's called the horizontal roll and tuck.
So let's begin!
What you'll need.
- Water in a spray bottle to lightly wet the hair to make it pliable.
- Styling cream, leave in or butter for moisture and shine.
- Gel or edge control for smoothing flyways
- Lots of bobby pins to hold the style in place.
- short, medium or long natural hair.
Tips:
The more texture and volume you have, the bigger the rolls.
If you have shorter hair, you can stretch it a little with twistouts, braidouts, African threading or blowout. You can also make smaller horizontal parts to roll.
If you have fine hair with less volume, a light blowout will give you some volume or you can work with your natural shrinkage.

Hi people, what's been on?
I'd like to address an issue about hair typing.
There are 4 hair types according to the hair typing system and while it is helpful to categorise your hair and give tips how to manage flaws, it does have a flaw.
4c hair can also have tiny "s" curls too. If your curls are around the diameter of a pen spring or slightly larger, you could say you've got 4c hair....
Again, it cannot 100% predict how best to care for your hair.
